  • Seeing the Sights: A Day Trip or Three

Seeing the Sights: A Day Trip or Three

With the luxurious accommodations and amenities available to you as a guest of The Fives, we’d certainly understand if you never want to leave the grounds of our hotel. If you do happen to be in the mood for some off-site adventure, there are plenty of great day trip destinations within a couple hours of The Fives. Here are a few of our favorites:

    La Casas de Los Venados:

Want to see some truly spectacular Mexican folk art? Casas de Los Venados, located in nearby Valladolid, is home to the most extensive private collection of such art in the country. Tours of their more than 3000 fascinating pieces are available in English and Spanish, starting at 10 A.M. daily.

Yalahao Spring and Lagoon at Holbox Island:

A crystalline spring on the edge of Holbox Island, Yalahao Spring was the favored spot of at least one Mayan king. One dip in the clear, warm waters, and you’ll understand why natives long considered Yalahao a magical place. You can also check out Yalahao Lagoon, a natural cenote once employed as a refuge by notorious 19th-century Spanish pirate Miguel Molas. The lagoon is located about a half-hour by boat from Holbox Island.

    Sian Ka’an:

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, Sian Ka’an is a nature park that encompasses at least 23 Mayan archeological sites, including the ancient city of Muyil. During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to explore not just Mayan ruins, but also lush jungle vegetation, pristine lagoons, and winding mangrove waterways.

  • Party the Night Away at the Coco Bongo Nightclub

With the countless world-class amenities of The Fives, you’ll never need to leave the resort to enjoy the utmost in seaside luxury. And when you’re ready for an adrenaline-pumping night out on the town, you’re just fifteen minutes away from the most thrilling nightclub experience on the Riviera Maya. Long a staple of the Playa del Carmen party scene, the Coco Bongo Nightclub is the place to be for dazzling entertainment that rivals the best of Las Vegas. You’ll be treated to the sight of high-flying circus acrobats, spot-on rock legend impersonators, and a procession of some of your favorite characters of the silver screen. But will there be drinks, you ask? Oh, indeed there will. With an open bar that pours heavy all night long, you’ll have no trouble quenching your thirst as you dance, sing, and marvel at the fantastic performances. At the end of the night, the supreme comfort of your luxurious Fives accommodations will be waiting to welcome you.

  • Discovering the Secrets of the Maya

We wouldn’t blame you if you decided you wanted to spend every day all day right here at The Fives, but if you’re in the mood for a fun and informative day trip, consider visiting the Mayan city of Tulum. Perched atop 40-foot cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Tulum was one of the last inhabited cities built by the Maya. A major port surrounded by an impressive wall for defense, the population was eventually decimated by diseases brought by European invaders. During your visit, you’ll see El Castillo, a fortress and temple with a prominent external staircase; the Temple of the Frescoes, which the Mayans used as an observatory to chart the course of the sun; and the Temple of the Descending God, which bears a conspicuous image of the sacred diving figure for which the temple is named. And that’s just a small sample of what you’ll see in this stunningly well-preserved Mayan city. Then, when you’re ready to return to modern civilization, the luxury and comfort of The Fives awaits you less than an hour away.

  • Pamper Yourself at Vassa Spa

You work hard every day. That’s a major reason you’ve chosen Playa del Carmen for your tropical getaway. Just setting foot on the warm sands of our beaches, not to mention the exquisite luxury of The Fives, is enough to melt all your tension away. For an even deeper level of relaxation, we recommend a day at the acclaimed Vassa Spa. Every aspect of our spa is designed to promote holistic health and wellness, right down to the elegant, flowing architecture. Choose from a variety of services, including hydrotherapy, flotation therapy, facials, massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, exfoliation, body wraps, romantic couples treatments, and much more. At The Fives, we take your health and wellness seriously, so you can indulge in some serious rest and relaxation.

  • Dining in Style at the Fives

Playa del Carmen is a great place to get authentic Mexican cuisine, but if you’re looking for a truly cosmopolitan experience that blends traditional Mexican fare with the best flavors from around the world, you can’t beat the restaurants at the Fives. At the Fives Downtown Hotel, you’ll find Mercatto, where the chefs work in an open kitchen to bring you healthy and delicious Italian dishes for breakfast and dinner; the roof-top Purobeach, where lunch, dinner, and late night bites combine a spoonful of Mexico, a dash of Miami, and a pinch of Marrakech; El Tigre, an elite tequila bar; and Marley Coffee, where you can get caffeinated in style. Gourmet delights also abound at the Fives Beach Hotel, where you can enjoy authentic Thai dishes under the watchful eye of the 15-foot Buddha in Koi Thai; delicately crafted sushi and sashimi and Oka Sushi Bar; French classics at La Brasserie; Mediterranean favorites at Sea Olive; Spanish tapas at Meso; not to mention gourmet burgers, zesty Italian, and the freshest catches in Mexico at our other exclusive dining spots.

  • Xcaret: The Riviera Maya’s Premier Eco-Amusement Park

Just a quick 20-minute drive from The Fives, Xcaret Park is the Riviera Maya’s premier amusement park, with attractions that combine ecological marvels and authentic Mesoamerican culture. You can see restored Mayan ruins, snorkel through majestic underground caves, explore colorful coral reefs, or swim with gentle bottlenose dolphins. The park includes a wide range of animal exhibits, such as a bat cave, an aviary, a butterfly pavilion, a deer enclosure, and a jaguar island. The simulated Mayan village features artisans plying their crafts much as they would have done millennia ago, as well as acrobats and dancers performing in authentic Mexican folklore and Mayan styles. Special performances are often staged for specific holidays, so check ahead to see what’s on the schedule. If you’re interested in visiting the park and would like us to arrange transportation for you, just let your concierge know. We’ll be happy to take care of all the details.

  • Swimming with the Sea Turtles

One of the great pleasures of life in Playa del Carmen is the immense variety of flora and fauna to explore just a short distance from the city. It’s hard to choose a favorite nature adventure, but if we had to pick just one, swimming with sea turtles would be high on the list. At nearby Akumal Bay, located less than a half-hour by car from Playa del Carmen, you can do just that in the clear turquoise waters that are home to numerous hawksbill, green, and loggerhead sea turtles. The most economical way to get to the beach at Akumal Bay is via the many safe and convenient colectivo taxis (that is, shared group taxis) that serve the Riviera Maya. Whether you choose to go by colectivo or would instead prefer to arrange different transportation, just let hotel staff know, and we’ll make sure your transit needs are taken care of. We can also help out with snorkeling equipment, or you can rent it from one of the local shops at Akumal Bay itself. Once you’ve arrived at the Bay, just look for groups of snorkelers in the water, and you’ll have found the sea turtles. There's no charge for admission, simply dive in and enjoy the company!

  • Chichen Itza at Night

When visiting Playa del Carmen, one of the must-see landmarks is Chichen Itza.  While many visitors make the day trip, we are letting you in on a little secret…after the sun sets, the famous ruins truly come to life! Located only a few hours away, Chichen Itza is a magical creation from the Mayan Empire. Each night, the main pyramid, Kukulkan, comes to life through a spectacular light and sound show, accentuating the pyramid’s impressive design. Uncover the wonder of the ancient ruins and go back in time with a personal guide who is also an expert in archaeology. Go for the combination tour that allows you to see the ruins during the day, but also allows you to stay for a once in a lifetime experience. Grab a few local delicacies available to eat and drink before you settle in for the show. Get ready to say, “lights, camera, Kukulkan!” Find more information on how to plan your trip here and our concierge team is always happy to help you plan an experience you won’t ever forget!

  • Art in Quinta

Art and culture are at the core of Playa del Carmen. While there is always an event, show or exhibition going on around town, you can be sure that every Thursday there is Art in Quinta. This weekly showcase is a local exhibition of artists on 5th Avenue and runs from 24th street to 30th street. We recommend strolling the artistic streets between 7 to 10 p.m. following an al fresco dinner or sampling of street food. Take in local works on easels and get up close and personal with the city’s best artists, including internationally recognized and celebrated talents like Jacobo Roa. A professional painter for 15 years, Roa has shown his works across the globe and has sold more than 900 paintings. He is now getting ready to celebrate his 1,000th work of art! See creations from a collection of artists and help support local artists by taking home a piece of art or two from the exhibition. The ongoing program has been supporting the local arts community for years and it’s something you won’t want to miss!

  • A Culinary Look at The Fives Plaza

It’s all about The Fives Plaza during any stay with us in Playa del Carmen. International culinary creations meet mixology in an intriguing space that puts you at the epicenter of a gourmet experience without leaving the resort. Not sure where to start? Check out our top dishes and drinks to try during a foodie’s tour of The Fives Plaza:

Kho Tai – After being greeted by a 15-foot Buddha, transport to the feelings and flavors of Thailand. We love the Coconut Soup to start followed by a traditional serving of the country’s most famous dish, Pad Thai.
Oka – Start with a Junami Sake or crisp Sapporo as you overlook The Fives Plaza. Trained sushi chefs carefully prepare a selection of sashimi, makis, sushi rolls and tempura. Go for a simple combination of salmon and toro sashimi followed by an assortment of handmade rolls that rotate regularly.
La Brasserie – In true brasserie style, dine on French classics that we love including Steak Tartare, Coq-au-Vin, Entrecôte au Poivre and Gratinated Onion Soup. A Cheese Trolley (yes, a cheese trolley) will take your taste buds to the streets of Burgundy and an extensive wine selection allows for perfect pairings. Insider dining tip: you do not want to miss the Flambéed Coffee Station.
Flavours – Take a trip around the globe in a welcoming and relaxed dining room with views of a true cenote (you know, a natural winding river flowing under our grounds). From Italian dishes like pizza and pasta to Mediterranean style fish, meats and accompaniments, the whole family will enjoy this dining experience.
The Gin Bar – You may have assumed, but gin & tonic is the way to go at this namesake bar featuring handcrafted gin cocktails.  Sip on a gin gimlet or gin martini as you stargaze on the terrace.
Nineteen Ten – Tequila and Mezcal await alongside Mariachi performances that take center stage three times weekly.  Feeling adventurous? Go beyond the cocktails and try a creatively prepared Oyster Shooter. Cheers!

    • PS, if you are looking for Vassa Spa, it’s also located in The Fives Plaza and the perfect way to start or end any day.
